Preparing for the school year as co-parents

by | Aug 30, 2019 | Child Custody |

The school year is once again upon us in Kentucky, which means many unhappy kids will reluctantly board school buses and head to class, while many smiling parents wave to their children. Preparing for the school year is not always easy for every parent, especially those who are co-parents involved in a child custody agreement. Today, we will provide some tips for co-parents so they can prepare for the school year.

Back-to-school shopping is a task that both parents should take part in with their child, even if it has to be done separately. One parent should not be responsible for doing the shopping, even if one parent pays child support. This is something that should be used as a bonding experience with the child.

Now is not the time to discuss issues with child support with the other parent, especially if the child is present. Many people tend to need more money in child support payments during the school year because of uniforms, supplies, fees, trips, books and other items. Discuss this with the other parent at a later date away from the child.

Prepare to attend school events in support of your child with the other parent. Just because you are separated, divorce or never married doesn’t mean you should skip a school event or trade which ones you attend. Having both parents present reinforces the love you have for your child and boosts their confidence.

Making sure everyone is on the same page is the most important thing you can do as a co-parent with the school year starting. Your child has been through enough and will be stressed going back to school. Getting you, the child and the other parent all on the same page can work wonders for the custody situation.
