How do I communicate effectively with my child during divorce?

by | Oct 4, 2019 | Child Custody |

Going through a divorce is difficult on everyone involved, especially your children. Some children cannot be consoled when they find out their parents are getting a divorce. Others will shut down emotionally and stop talking to you. Then there are some who will continue on as if nothing is happening. No matter your situation, it’s important to communicate effectively with your child.

The most important thing you can do once you let your child know about the divorce is to speak about it to them with the other parent present. Try not to discuss the divorce when the other parent isn’t around. You don’t want to wind up bad-mouthing the other parent to the children.

When your child approaches you with questions, no matter how difficult, be as open and honest as possible. Your children are smarter than you think. They know when they are being given an answer just to receive an answer. Don’t sugarcoat things for them either. Let them know what is happening, so they can deal with it the best they can.

Make sure you communicate to your children that the divorce is final. Do not give them hope that maybe mom and dad will get back together again. This will only give them false hope that the family will once again be intact.

Learning how to communicate effectively with your child during divorce can make the situation easier for you and your child. Be sure to follow the tips outlined here today to make the best effort possible. If all else fails, it might be time to seek help from a therapist.
