Paternity testing: Are mistakes ever made?

On Behalf of | Nov 13, 2020 | Child Custody |

Children thrive when they have positive relationships with both their parents. So, when the paternity of a child is in question, men in Kentucky who could be the father of the child might have to offer their DNA for genetic testing to prove or disprove a biological relationship to the child. The man who is found to be the biological father may have to provide his child with support and care.

However, there is always room for error in a DNA test. Mistakes could be made in evaluating the data. It is crucial to understand the ways errors could potentially skew paternity test results for the sake of everyone involved. These types of tests may be affected by human error such as samples being mixed up, samples being contaminated with foreign materials.

Results can also be tampered with or a man could send in someone else’s sample (which is why it is important to have these tests done in person). A man who knows he cannot father a child (with medical proof), but who is shown to be a child’s biological father based on genetic testing, might be able to challenge those results in court. These are only some of the ways paternity tests might be affected accidentally or intentionally.

Kentucky residents who have concerns about paternity testing would do well to obtain further information from an attorney. There are family law options that could help. Establishing paternity properly is necessary since a biological father has legal responsibilities to contribute to the support of his child.
